This last Friday on my Instagram @loseyrslfdesigns, I found some beautiful alternatives to designer brand items that would help style your shelf like you see on the Pinterest boards you love to peruse.

I thought I’d break down how to style your shelving here on the blog as well as sharing again these finds that will help you style your space without breaking the bank.

First Step, Gather inspiration for the look you want.

Head to my Pinterest account and follow it to get lots of looks on my Fancy Interiors board if this mood is your vibe. A lot of my inspiration comes from Amber Lewis, Studio McGee, Crate & Barrel, and the like. I love the soft country feel combined with contrasts of modern edginess.

Second, Play with Contrasting Colors, and Focus on a Color Scheme

We want to keep these shelves cohesive but with some dimension. The cohesive aspect of styling your bookshelf is staying to a color scheme. Play with gray, beige and earth-centered colors and add some interest and that dimension I mentioned by darkening or lightening an element or two to create that contrast.

Third, having trouble keeping to your colors with the book spine art? Turn them around!

I love books, they are my other children in this life. (See my favorite book list here, it’s ever growing). So, I know it can sound sorta shameful to turn those beautiful book spines to face the back of the shelf, but if you want to create a neutral display that doesn’t pull from the overall room design, it might be a technique you love. I mixed it up on my shelf, turning some forward and others back and it added to the rhythm of my shelf quite nicely!

Fourth, What are Levels? How do you create them?

Levels are mixing and matching different sized objects and books and tapering them to show height change from shelf to shelf. This practice makes things interesting, leading the eye round and round the area searching for patterns and a balanced display.

Last but not least, switch up the textures from time to time.

Bookends are a great way to add a little shiny something, or some family photos in an antique frame and other reflective personal touches. This is where you get creative. I have a love of everything with pigs on it, or shaped like a pig, and over the years I’ve collected various pig statues with different styles that are placed around my home. It adds character and different plays on surface texture. I love a pop of some wooden bowl or beads sitting atop books that help with this dynamic as well.

By decluttering, choosing a color scheme, mixing and matching, using books as decor, and adding personal touches, you can transform your bookshelf into a stunning focal point in your space. Happy Shelving! Thanks for stopping by!
